Fake Piano

Test tones a real piano cannot give you

A strobe tuner shows its true colors on inharmonic sounds. Fake Piano produces exact, repeatable ones from a second device.

Why not a real piano

Real pianos drift, and no two notes are alike. If you are building, testing, or calibrating a strobe tuner, you need tones whose inharmonicity you control down to the cent. Fake Piano synthesizes piano tones with the Rigaud inharmonicity model, so the same test gives the same result every time.

  1. Exact inharmonicity, by the number

Each partial frequency follows the real stiff-string formula, with a B coefficient you choose. Pick one of eight profiles copied from StroboPro, from concert grand to an idealized zero-B string, or draw your own B curve in the editor.

  2. Cents control at 0.1 cent steps

The jog wheel detunes any note across the full plus and minus 100 cent range in tenth-of-a-cent steps, so you can check what your tuner reads at the edge of its display range.

  3. Practice hearing detuning

The tuning practice game detunes a note by a hidden amount up to 50 cents. You guess, it reveals, and grades you. It is ear training with the same tones you test against.

Frequently asked questions

Does Fake Piano work with any strobe tuner?

Yes. It plays tones through your speakers and any listening tuner can hear them. It was built alongside StroboPro, so its preset profiles match that app.

Why synthesize instead of recording a real piano?

A recording is fixed. With synthesis you can set the exact B coefficient and cents offset you want and get the identical tone again on demand.
